Khawaja powers Australia ahead

Australia opener Usman Khawaja starred with the bat on the opening day of the fourth and final Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Thursday.

After opting to bat, Australia posted 255 for four in 90 overs when stumps were drawn.

Earlier, Australia began well with their openers Travis Head (32) and Khawaja adding 61 for the opening wicket. Then India brought things back under control as they dismissed Marnus Labuschagne. Captain Steve Smith then teamed up with Khawaja as the pair put on 79 for the third wicket. Smith was dismissed for 38. Peter Handscomb was also dismissed cheaply. It then required an unbroken 85 run fifth wicket stand between Cameron Green and Khawaja to end the day on a high for the visitors. Khawaja finished unbeaten on 104 off 251 balls with 15 boundaries. Green was unbeaten on 49 off 64 balls with eight boundaries. Australia finished on 255 for four when stumps were drawn.
