Delhi finally register first win beating Chennai by 20 runs

Delhi Capitals beat Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs to register their first win of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season at the Dr. Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

Match Analysis

Opting to bat, Delhi ended with a total of 191 for five, in response Chennai fought tooth and nail but couldn’t chase the target as they ended with 171 for six. 

David Warner (52:35b,5x4, 3x6) and Prithvi Shaw (43:27b, 4x4, 2x6) took Delhi off to a brutal start. The pair batted with an aggressive mindset and stitched 93 runs for the opening partnership that put Chennai on the back foot.

Matheesha Pathirana then brought Chennai back into the game as he picked three quick wickets. But Delhi skipper Rishabh Pant (51:32b, 4x4, 3x6), who started slowly, soon found his mojo and slammed a whirlwind half-century. Pant’s innings powered Delhi to a total of 191 for five. 

Chennai couldn’t get off to a start that they would’ve wanted. Khaleel Ahmed removed both the openers in Ruturaj Gaikwad and Rachin Ravindra to leave the visitors at seven for two. Ajinkya Rahane (45:30b, 5x4, 2x6) and Daryl Mitchell (34:26b, 1x4, 2x6) brought Chennai back in the chase with their 68-run stand.

However, after their wickets, Sameer Rizvi and Shivam Dube got out early as Chennai saw themselves reeling at 120 for six. Ravindra Jadeja (21 not out:17b, 2x4) and MS Dhoni (37 not out:16b, 4x4, 3x6) in the end entertained the crowd with their power-hitting but the target was too much, Delhi restricted Chennai to 171 for six and won the game by 20 runs.
