Gujarat snatch win from the jaws of defeat beating Mumbai by 6 runs

Mumbai Indians couldn’t end their jinx of not winning the first match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) as Gujarat Titans defeated them by six runs at the Narendra Modi International Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.

Match Analysis

Asked to bat, Gujarat ended with 168 for six even, but Mumbai ended up on the losing side as they lost wickets at regular intervals.

Wriddhiman Saha and captain Shubman Gill (31:22b, 3x4, 1x6) provided a vital start to the team. The 31-run opening partnership was broken by Jasprit Bumrah. Sai Sudharsan (45:39b, 3x4, 1x6) played a decent hand for the team and made sure Gujarat kept getting runs in the middle overs.

Rahul Tewatia (22:15b, 2x4, 1x6) in the end played a brutal hand and ensured his team got a decent total on the board as Gujarat ended with 168 for six in 20 overs. For Mumbai, Jasprit Bumrah was the pick of the bowlers with his figures of three for 14. 

Mumbai lost Ishan Kishan for a duck but new recruit Naman Dhir changed the course of the game.

He blasted 20 runs off just 10 balls and tilted the momentum towards Mumbai. Rohit Sharma (43:29b, 7x4, 1x6) and impact player Dewald Brevis (46:38b, 2x4, 3x6) then got the game in their grasp of Mumbai with their 77-run stand. But after their wickets, Mumbai came under a lot of pressure.

Tim David and Tilak Varma (25:19b, 1x4, 1x6) also perished as Mumbai was reduced to 150 for seven. With 19 runs needed off the last over, Umesh Yadav conceded 10 runs off the first two balls. But Yadav made sure he defended the target for his team.
