With their 1-0 home loss to Lyon, Paris Saint-Germain suffered their seventh defeat of 2023. When Lyon forward Bradley Barcola scored the game's only goal, PSG was booed off the field. The game started ten minutes late because Lyon's bus couldn't fit under a bridge and had to drive around the city.

Prior to his penalty kick, the ninth-place visitors' Alexandre Lacazette hit the post. Kylian Mbappe, PSG's all-time leading scorer, attempted to salvage a draw late in the game, but his shot was stopped.

The defending French champions are only six points ahead of Lens and Marseille with nine games remaining. PSG has lost seven of their last 18 games in all competitions after going undefeated in all 22 games prior to the break. Messi has been approached by Barcelona about a possible return to the team where he spent the majority of his career, in addition to discussing a contract extension with PSG. In 67 games played for the team, he has scored 29 goals.
