South Africa took a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series as they thumped India by an innings and 32 runs on Day three at the Supersport Park in Centurion.
South Africa resumed at their overnight score of 254 for five and then finished on 408. With a deficit of 163, India was found wanting as they were bowled out for just 131 as South Africa won by a massive margin.
Dean Elgar (185:287b, 28x4) and Marco Jansen (84 not out: 147b, 11x4, 1x6) continued from where they left on Wednesday. The duo made a mockery of the Indian bowling attack and added 111 runs partnership. Their staggering partnership helped South Africa take a big lead in the first innings. Jasprit Bumrah bagged four wickets as India ended South Africa’s innings on 408.
In their second innings, it was a forgetful outing for India with the bat. Skipper Rohit Sharma bagged a duck and after that wickets fell like a pack of cards. Virat Kohli (76:82b, 12x4, 1x6) played the one-man army role and kept his team in the hunt with his half-century. But South African bowlers bowled impeccable lines and lengths and picked wickets in no time. They bandied out India for just 131 runs to win the game by innings and 32 runs. Nandre Burger picked four wickets whereas Marco Jansen bagged three scalps.
