Bowlers' Day Out at Newlands on opening day

The Day 1 of the second Test match between South Africa and India of the two-match series belonged to bowlers.

The Newlands Park in Cape Town saw 23 wickets falling on the opening day of the game. South Africa won the toss and opted to bat first. They got all out for just 55 runs but made a strong comeback to bundle out India for 153 runs. At stumps on Day 1, the hosts in the second innings were 62 for three and were trailing by 36.

South Africa couldn’t quite get going at all with the bat. Mohammed Siraj was all over the batters as he picked six wickets and didn’t allow them to settle at all. No Proteas batter couldn’t go past the 20-run mark as India bundled out the hosts for just 55 runs. Kyle Verreynee (15:30b, 1x4) was the top run scorer for his team. For India apart from Siraj, Jasprit Bumrah and Mukesh Kumar also picked two wickets each.

India didn’t have a great start to their innings as they lost Yashasvi Jaiswal for a duck. But after that skipper Rohit Sharma (39:50b, 7x4) and Shubman Gill (36: 55b, 5x4) played well and added 55 runs for the second wicket. Following that, Virat Kohli (46:59b, 6x4, 1x6) played a decent hand despite wickets falling on the other hand. But post the tea session, it was a horrible outing for India as they lost the last six wickets for no runs and were bundled out for 153. They had a lead of 98 runs in the first innings. For South Africa, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi and Nandre Burger picked three wickets each.

In the second innings, it was a similar story for South Africa. They lost early wickets and came under pressure. Dean Elgar (12:28b, 2x4) along with Tony de Zorzi and Tristan Stubbs fell for just 45 runs. Aiden Markram (36 not out: 51b, 6x4) held the fort for his team along with David Bedingham. At Stumps on Day 1, South Africa were 62 for three and were trailing by 36.
